As a testimony to these encounters, the Mark Twain Room still conserves the autographs of these famous artists. The patron of the arts died an early death and his son, Leopold Hauer, took over the Griechenbeisl in 1914 at the tender age of 18. However his art collection was completely lost during the terrible events of World War One. After the war, Leopold Hauer discovered that his true vocation was to become an artist himself. After studying at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Josef Jungwirth and Karl Sterrer, he became known principally for his floral works and landscapes. At this time too the Griechenbeisl also flourished as a meeting point for artists and his sister, Christa Hauer-Fruhmann, also became a painter of considerable repute. In 1960, together with her husband, the painter Johann Fruhmann, she founded the ‘Galerie im Griechenbeisl’ which operated until 1971. She continues to live and work in the Griechenbeisl.
