Oh, du lieber Augustin
The Griechenbeisl has always been a pillar of Viennese public house culture and a reflection of the city’s history. On two occasions the Turks stormed the walls of the house while earthquakes, fires, floods and plague put the lives of the Viennese in danger. Time and again though, the vivacity of the Viennese was victorious, immortalized in the balladeer Augustin’s world famous song ‘Oh my dear Augustin, everything is gone’ that he wrote and sang here in the Griechenbeisl.

The Song – Lyrics and Music

Chorus:
Oh, my dear Augustin,
Augustin, Augustin,
Oh, my dear Augustin,
Everything is gone!

1.
The money’s gone, the women are gone,
Everything is gone, Augustin!
Oh, my dear Augustin,
Everything is gone!

Chorus:
Oh, my dear Augustin,
Augustin, Augustin,
Oh, my dear Augustin,
Everything is gone!

2.
His coat is gone, his stick is gone,
Augustin lies in the filth.
Oh, my dear Augustin,
Everything is gone!

The legend of Dear Augustin

The legend of Dear Augustin

Chorus:
Oh, my dear Augustin,
Augustin, Augustin,
Oh, my dear Augustin,
Everything is gone!

3.
And even wealthy Vienna,
Has gone like Augustin;
Weeping just like me,
Everything is gone!

Chorus:
Oh, my dear Augustin,
Augustin, Augustin,
Oh, my dear Augustin,
Everything is gone!
